How to Spot Butterflies presented by Pat Sutton

Event Type: Natural History Program
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 8/7/2017
Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Time: 7:30 PM
Description:
 .

Pat Sutton, professional naturalist and author, will present a program relating her fascination with butterflies and convey the excitement of searching for, studying, enjoying, and attracting these winged jewels just as she and her husband did in their book by the same title. She will uncover mysteries about their life cycle, relationships to the plant world, odd behaviors, survival in a world filled with hungry predators, the spectacular migration of some species, and the restricted ranges of others. Field identification can often be enabled by understanding all these aspects of a butterfly's annual life cycle. Sutton will take you on a journey to some of her favorite butterfly watching spots here on her home turf at Cape May and throughout southern New Jersey and afar B an Arctic wilderness trip in northern Alaska, a winter trip to THE Monarch roost in Mexico, butterflying in the tropics and abroad, and more.

Pat Sutton has keenly studied the natural world for over 30 years (as the naturalist at the Cape May Point State Park in the 1970s and 1980s and for 21 years, until 2007, as the naturalist and program director at the Cape May Bird Observatory). Pat has an undergraduate degree in Literature and a Masters Degree in Environmental Education. She and her husband (Clay Sutton) wrote the landmark book, Birds and Birding at Cape May (2006), the in-depth result of their efforts over many years documenting and protecting the migration and the Cape May area that they so love. Other books by Pat and Clay include How to Spot Butterflies (1999), How to Spot Hawks & Eagles (1996), and How to Spot an Owl (1994). Today Pat is a free-lance writer, naturalist, educator, lecturer, tour leader, and wildlife garden consultant. Her own wildlife garden is a teaching garden included on many tours and featured in programs and workshops she teaches. For more information go to Pat and Clay’s website: www.patandclaysutton.com
