Creative Writing through the Senses at Cape May Court House Library

Write stories as naturally as you sense them. Participants will need to bring writing materials (paper, ruled or unruled and pen or pencil), a photo and something tangible addressing the sense of smell, the sense of sight and the sense of touch, for the first session. We will, if desired by the individual, have an opportunity to share our stories with the group. Participants will bring home a method of writing that forges a clear and easily accessible way to get deep writing done.
Sandi Wheaton is a recently retired Licensed Creative Arts Therapist having a Master's degree from Drexel University. This is not a “guess the composer” competition, but a chance to say what you like or dislike without any “politically correct” considerations. All is revealed in the end.

Education and other strong partnering in our communities are central to the Bay-Atlantic Symphony's purpose. We perform fully symphonic educational concerts—free of charge—at all three of our collegiate venues, reaching over 2,000 students annually, with online study guides written by our Music Director that are a hit with teachers and students. Bay-Atlantic Symphony is unique in its extensive adult education program which brings music scholar, enthusiast, composer and lecturer Paul Somers to cultural centers throughout our region.

The Bay-Atlantic Symphony, which gives performances in four South Jersey counties, was established in 1983 as the Bridgeton Symphony. The orchestra has grown to an impressive ensemble with national recognition. The orchestra changed its name in 1998 to the Bay-Atlantic Symphony to reflect this artistic growth and the regionalization of its stature. The Bay-Atlantic Symphony has been broadcast repeatedly on National Public Radio, including a segment on Weekend Edition 2004—a feature also broadcast by Voice of America in English and translated throughout Europe and the former Soviet Union.
In addition to its continued relationship with Richard Stockton College, the Bay-Atlantic Symphony has been the resident symphony of the Guaracini Fine and Performing Arts Center at Cumberland County College since 1999, orchestra-in-residence of the Cape May Music Festival since 2003, and the resident orchestra of Avalon’s “Symphony by the Sea” summer series. During the 2009-10 season, the Symphony is adding Rowan University’s Pfleeger Concert Hall in Glassboro to its regular subscription concert performance venues.
The outreach also includes music education programs and four-county monthly lecture series. It has been further strengthened through active membership in the South Jersey Cultural Alliance, Jersey Arts Communicators, League of American Orchestras, Art Pride New Jersey, Arts and Business Partnership of Southern New Jersey, as well as various local chambers of commerce, and community-based groups.
How to Spot an Owl and Pellet Session presented by Pat Sutton at CMCH Library

When: Tuesday, October 05, 2010 - 6:00 PM
Where: Cape May Court House Library at Court House Library Storytime Room

Learn when and how to look for the eight different kinds of owls that occur here in Cape May County: Great Horned, Screech, Barred, Barn, Short-eared, Long-eared, Saw-whet, and Snowy Owl from the person who wrote the book about owls,Pat Sutton! In this slide program Pat will relate her fascination with owls and convey the excitement of searching for, understanding, and enjoying these illusive and mysterious nocturnal predators. Owling etiquette (how to spot owls without disturbing them) will be emphasized. Following the discussion there will be an opportunity to dissect and study an owl pellet during the final 45 minutes.
Pat Sutton has studied owls in the wild for 30 years. She lives near Cape May, a world renowned migratory crossroads that is famous for its owl migration. She and her husband (Clay Sutton) wrote the popular book, How to Spot an Owl (1994, now out of print), as well as How to Spot Butterflies (1999), How to Spot Hawks & Eagles (1996), and most recently the landmark book, Birds and Birding at Cape May (Stackpole Books, 2006, 568 pages), the in-depth result of their efforts over many years documenting and protecting the migration and the Cape May area that they so love. Today Pat is a free-lance writer, naturalist, educator, lecturer, tour leader, and wildlife habitat consultant. Her own wildlife garden is a teaching garden included on many tours and featured in programs and workshops she teaches.
Software, or How does it do that?

When: Wednesday, October 06, 2010 - 9:00 AM
Where: Cape May Court House Library at Court House TEC

Confused by all that talk of drives, storage, memory, media, RAM, ROM and wondering if everyone is fluent in binary code but you? Well join us to see how the computer gets information, how it processes and stores it and where. You'll also see how different drives read different media and why sometimes you rip, sometimes you burn and sometimes you sync. You won't leave here writing code or doing any programming language but you'll have a good basic understanding of why you need to know what a byte is and what the computer can do with it. A couple of the exercises shown in this workshop are not available for you to practice on the Library's public access computers but it's still recommended to all beginngers as a good foundation workshop.

Registration is required for this event. Please call the TEC (609-463-6341) to register. Have your Library Card ready. For additional information on this and other TEC workshops, please visit the Library's website and click on the TEC links. Flyers are also available in our branches describing our TEC offerings.
