Engineering Evil

Mr. Robert F. Holden retired Senior Adjunct Professor of History (Holocaust & Genocide Studies) will be giving a presentation about the Holocaust entitled, Engineering Evil.

Mr. Robert F. Holden retired Senior Adjunct Professor of History (Holocaust & Genocide Studies) will be giving a presentation about the Holocaust entitled, Engineering Evil. (Mr. Holden is currently the Historian for The Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township, Cape May County, NJ. and a frequent speaker in the area about a wide variety of topics in American and World History.) To begin, Mr. Holden will show segments of a United States Holocaust Memorial Museum- produced DVD (available for teachers /professors only) entitled, The Path to Nazi Genocide, specifically focusing on the Aftermath of World War One and the Rise of the Nazis; 1918-1933, and their Building of a National Community from 1933-1938. Developed by the staff at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Engineering Evil is one of the best overall portraits of the Holocaust from the early days of persecution of the Jewish people in Nazi Germany through the implementation of massive concentration camps. This film is narrated by renowned Holocaust expert, author and professor, Dr. Michael Berenbaum. (He is the author of The World Must Know and many other publications about this chapter of history.) Throughout the program, (which will be paused and richly interpreted by Prof. Holden), viewers will learn about artifacts, photographs, and oral histories that provide detailed evidence of the processes and plans the Nazis developed to extinguish the lives of millions of Jews throughout Europe. Mr. Holden will also provide many of his own collected artifacts for viewing. Rather than take a sweeping perspective on the Holocaust, this program focuses on more intimate and everyday stories of political transformation, violence, and loss under the Nazi regime. Engineering Evil gives viewers specific and personal insights into the lives of those who perished and into the actions and plans of those who enacted the Holocaust. Viewers travel through the archives of Eastern Europe, to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, and to the restoration labs in Israel to see how artifacts serve as powerful links to those who lost their lives. Curators and historians help explain how the Nazis were able to accomplish such horrific crimes against humanity over the course of just a few years; 1933-1945. The projected time is about 2.5+ hours. At the end, questions and comments are strongly encouraged!
