Spring Ahead of Cancer Workshop, session 4. Join us on Zoom!
Please join the Cape May County Library and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey for a free, six-part virtual workshop series that promotes cancer education, prevention, and detection!
This session will focus on lung cancer and tobacco use. We will discuss the merits of quitting tobacco use, as well as what you need to know about lung cancer in a post-Corona world. There are significant positive effects of smoking cessation on the health of lung cancer patients: decreased risk of disease, increased survival time, decreased postoperative complications, increased efficacy of chemotherapy, decreased radiation therapy complications, and improved QOL. Join us to discuss.
BONUS: TWO Cape May County treatment specialists will be live on the call to answer any Quit Center-specific questions! We will have Kim Burns, BA, NCTTP, from the Atlantic County Quit Center and Nikki Nichols, MSW, LSW, CTP, from the Cape Assist Quit Center on the call.
Heather Jordan, the presenter for the evening, is a Research Program Manager and Health Educator at the Rutgers Center for Tobacco Studies at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Ms. Jordan currently coordinates the technical assistance for the Tobacco Free Healthy New Jersey Quit Centers. She also coordinates and delivers pertinent health education learning experiences for ScreenNJ. She holds a Master's Degree in Public Health with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health from The George Washington University, and a Bachelor’s degree with dual concentrations in Marketing and Health Planning and Management from Alfred University. Ms. Jordan is Certified in Public Health (CPH), a Master Health Education Specialist (MCHES), and is trained as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist through the Rutgers Tobacco Dependence Program.
Nikki Nichols, MSW, LSW,CTP,TTS is a Prevention Program Coordinator for Cape Assist in Wildwood NJ and currently serves as the Quit Center Coordinator for the Cape May County Quit Center Program. Nikki is a 2012 graduate of Stockton University’s Master of Social Work program and is a Licensed Social Worker through the state of New Jersey, as well a Certified Trauma Professional. Nikki was trained through the Rutgers Tobacco Dependence Program in 2019 as a Tobacco Dependence Treatment Specialist. Nikki has extensive experience in the counseling field and understands the elements and cycle of addition as well the deep-rooted connection on how trauma and substance misuse are connected.
Kim Burns has worked in the prevention field for over twenty-three years. She has been employed at Atlantic Prevention Resources (APR) since 2000. As an employee of Atlantic Prevention Resources, Kim was the REBEL (Reaching Everyone By Exposing Lies) Tobacco Prevention Coordinator for the Atlantic County program and later became the coordinator for the adult tobacco coalition. Throughout her 20 years at APR, Kim has presented to local youth, parents, and community members on the dangers of tobacco, underage drinking and other drugs.
Kim currently works on the Tobacco Free for a Healthy NJ grants, and is Tobacco Coordinator for the Southern Region and oversees all APR tobacco grants. She is also the Atlantic Quit Center Supervisor.
