MEDICAID PLANNING AND OTHER HIDDEN LEGAL RIGHTS
People clip coupons to save thirty cents on a supermarket item but will not visit a lawyer to save thirty thousand dollars in Asset Protection from Medicaid. Why? Because they are familiar with one and unfamiliar with the other. The purpose of this talk is to make you familiar with the many ways to save big money through ordinary legal maneuvering.
The focus is primarily on Medicaid. People placing a family member in a nursing home are told they have to “spend down” the patient’s wealth to get Medicaid. This is not necessarily so. Often the greater part of the patient’s money can be kept for the benefit of their family. The talk will also cover other legal situations where, with or without a lawyer, substantial money can be saved.
Debt collection: here's a great tip for fighting a debt collector: show up in court. That alone will save you 50% at the least. Some people ignore court notices and only call a lawyer when their bank account is frozen – by then it is too late. Another tip for saving thousands in legal fees and court time: get your Will, Power of Attorney and other estate documents done before you get sick. A healthy person, with a mere signature, can empower a family member to handle all their finances in the event of serious illness or death. But for a person who through sickness or injury can no longer speak or think for themselves the family must appear in court and petition for guardianship or letters of administration. People too often think of lawyers as costing you money but there are many things a lawyer can do to save you money.
