Explaining New Jersey's Many, Many Municipalities
New Jersey has 566 municipalities. In contrast, California has 482. Why does New Jersey have so many independent towns and subsequently so many municipal governments? Join historian and archivist Mickey DiCamillo as he explains why New Jersey has divided itself, divided itself again, and almost always refuses to erase its municipal boundaries. Does this subdivision of the state make New Jersey better or worse off? We will discover that the debate is quintessentially American and as old as Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson.
Mickey DiCamillo is an archivist, historian, and information specialist. He has worked for the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Hagley Library and Museum. He has published in the Journal of Film and History, the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia, and in 2004 was Veterans of Foreign Wars New Jersey State Teacher of the Year for Civic Education. He lives in Moorestown, NJ where he has served on the board for the township's historical society.
